Biology

Adults are found in soft bottom areas of the continental shelf and upper slope. They feed on both bottom-dwelling (benthic) and open-water (pelagic) prey such as crustaceans, fishes, cephalopods, and echinoderms. The eggs are fertilized internally and the embryo begins developing before the eggs are released in the ocean. Larvae and juveniles are found in the open ocean waters (pelagic). Caution: has venom gland.
