Body dark blue to bluish-grey above, silvery white to golden below; dorsal fin lobe black; rear lateral-line scutes may be dark to black; tail fin yellow; sometimes an indistinct dark spot on the corner of the operculum, and a dark smudge on the lower pectoral fin; juveniles with ~5 dark bars on body.


Biology

A schooling species usually found on offshore reefs. Juveniles are encountered along shores of sandy beaches, also over muddy bottoms. May penetrate into brackish water and enter rivers. Often approach divers. Roving predator which patrols while swimming near the surface or at mid-water, lunging mainly at small fishes. Feed on bottom-dwelling (benthic), rocky dweller fishes, shrimps, and other invertebrates. Seems to forage mainly at twilight.
